What causes skin ageing?
There’s nothing you can do to stop ageing, but there is a lot we can do to help to prevent the visible signs of ageing. How our skin looks affects how old we feel and how old we look to others. Your skin is hugely influenced by your body’s general wellbeing and if your body is not healthy it is often reflected by your skin.
Some of the signs of ageing skin are:
- Thinning and wrinkling which happens as the rate of cell production slows in the epidermis. The skin may also become thinner and these changes can cause creping and wrinkling.
- Sagging in older skin as less elastin (elastic fibres for suppleness) and collagen (dense fibres for strength) are made and your skin ultimately yields to the forces of gravity.
- Age spots that appear as pigment cells start to increase in certain areas, like the backs of your hands which have been exposed to the sun, and cluster together, forming age or liver spots.
- Dryness, roughness and itching caused because older skin has fewer sweat and oil glands.
How fast and how much your skin ages is determined by, in part, genetics. Far more important factors are smoking, pollution, sun tanning stress and lack of sleep and poor nutrition.
