Milia/Whiteheads

What are milia / whiteheads?

Milia, or whiteheads, are deeply seeded white bumps that form when skin cells and other debris become trapped in your skin and cannot exfoliate naturally. You can get them anywhere, but they usually form around the eyes and cheeks. In combination with bacteria, whiteheads can cause acne and in severe cases lead to cystic acne.

The most common cause of whiteheads is using skin care products that are either too heavy, not suited for your skin type or are of poor quality. You can also get them when you get too much sun and develop thicker skin with more blockages. Alternatively, some people just have the type of skin which can’t exfoliate itself properly.

Don’t panic. Help is at hand in totalcare where a trained therapist will soon have that whitehead out of there.

The experts recommend:

Your therapist will insert the tip of a sterile Angie probe just inside the edge of the whitehead. Sometimes it will pop out at this stage, if the whitehead has not been there a long time and is still soft and liquid. Otherwise a tiny electrical current is used to liquefy the hard oil trapped in the skin. Sometimes a facial treatment using a low galvanic current and specific, electrically chargeable products, such as Action de Gala Limpiderm deep cleansing gel, will be used before the Angie treatment – your therapist will know what will work best. The results are usually instant and permanent.

Vita-Sensa LT – 2G

The Vita-Sensa LT is the most versatile beauty option since it provides treatments for many facial skin problems : redness, acne, wrinkles, loss of firmness and dull complexion. It differs from the other devices on
the market because it offers 3 colours on the same device as well as the possibility of combining 2 colours at a time. Each colour penetrates the skin at a specific depth and generates distinct effects. The blue colour produces a purifying effect on the sebaceous glands and acne, the green colour reduces the aspect of redness caused by broken capillaries, while red diminishes the signs of aging. We can add this to any of our treatments and we also sell it as a home-care product, so that clients can continue their treatments at home.

It is a preventative treatment that does not treat capillaries that are already broken but uses a green light, which is the opposite colour to red on the light spectrum, to treat underlying redness which can often lead to broken capillaries.

Our top tips for preventing milia/whiteheads:

  • Take care of your skin with a good skincare regime and regular exfoliations.
  • Come to totalcare for regular facial treatments using the very latest techniques. This will prevent the build-up of oil and the formation of whiteheads and blackheads.
  • Review your skincare products and avoid any heavy ones that can block your pores.

Talk to your skincare therapist and always make sure you follow their specific recommendations for care before and after your treatment.
